Added Goals Tab to Blog

I just added my goals for the year to the blog.  I don't know why it took me until April to do this, but here they are.  A lot of these I've already been working on.  So far in 2012 I've added 4 new positions in my quest to build up to 30.  I've haven't bought any foreign holdings this year, but I have identified Canadian banks I'd like to own.

Financial goals for 2012:
o $3800 annualized passive income from investments: This is based off an analysis I did in 2010.  If I reach $3800 I will meet projections and be on track with the plan (2013 is $4650).  Currently almost $3400, this should be easy.
o Increase dividend growth portfolio to 30 positions:  I want to be diversified and prevent one position from hurting me too much in case something bad happens.  Currently hold 24 positions.
o Hold 3 foreign dividend growth stocks:  Diversify beyond U.S. holdings.  I will need to buy 2 more.

Non Financial goals for 2012:
o Visit one new country or state:  I re-enlisted to go to Korea after I wasn't able to get Germany.  Should move later this year.
o Quit tobacco: This will be the toughest goal since I've been smoking/dipping for over 10 years.  I quit Tuesday 27MAR2012, but this isn't the first time I've tried.  I will allow myself to smoke while drinking only.
o Perform 70 pushups in 2 minutes while maintaining good form:  I graded a PT test last month; one of the soldiers in my line did 111 pushups.  It made me realize how weak sauce I am.  The most I've ever done is 65 and can currently do about 55-60.
o Perform 10 consecutive pullups; no cheating (all the way up, all the way down):  I can do 6 right now.
o Run 2 miles under 15 minutes:  I'm at around 15:30 right now.

  1. Awesome list of goals.

Your dividend income goal is great. I'm hoping to get somewhere near $3800 in dividend income by the end of next year.

I haven't seen how many pushups I can do lately. I used to be able to do 90, but that was a few years ago. I think I could knock-out 50 no problem right now.

Good luck on all the goals. Hopefully 2012 treats you well!

    Best wishes.

  2. I've noticed that my fitness level has been declining the past few months. The Army changed physical training to a new system which frankly doesn't give good workouts. We used to do lots of pushups, not anymore. It doesn't make sense because they still test us on pushups, situps, and 2 mile run. You'd think we would practice that. I've taken to working out on my own.

You used to be able to do 90? That's impressive because I doubt it was even your goal. I'm tall with long arms but I think I will make it to 70 eventually.

  3. It was refreshing to see the non-financial goals alongside the income numbers. We all need to grow in many ways for as long as we can. Setting concrete goals is certainly helpful.

What is your quit smoking strategy? I know a few folks who quit and all did it cold-turkey style. Some read a book, some just quit on their own. I smoked back in school days, but only when drinking and quit completely about 12 years ago.

    1. I started by switching to those little snus pouches made by Marlboro and Camel. When I felt the need I popped one in instead of smoking. That lasted about 2 months and my body became used to less nicotine (might be psychological).

2 weeks ago I just stopped. Cold turkey. I told everyone I was quitting which makes it harder to back out. I have not drank any alcohol since I quit to rid my system of nicotine all together. Next weekend I will drink and will smoke because of it. There is no way I can drink and not smoke, it's just not going to happen. I'm not a huge drinker however. Oh plus I broke up with my girlfriend who smokes more than I do making quitting easier.

Found out today I'm supposed to report to South Korea in June, hope to get my orders soon.

  4. Congrats on your goals. I like the fitness goals as well. At 43 I do 50 pushups, 40 situps and run 16:30 or so during my PT test. But my pullups are horrible, lol. Thank goodness the Army doesnt measure that during their PT tests, Id be in trouble.

  5. Haha yeah I'm glad they don't test us on pullups too. I took a PT test last week and did 58 pushups, 76 situps, and ran a 15:32. My situps are good, I'm concentrating on pushups and running which is why I put them in my goals. I put on 10 pounds the last 6 months, I may need to start watching my diet. I'm 6'3" and weigh 206 so I'm good for now. I've never had to worry about my weight ever. I see that getting older affects your metabolism and makes it difficult to run fast.

    Thank you for your service!
