January Recap

It appears the stock market is finally going to correct.  I plan to use some reserve cash to purchase extra shares next month in addition to regular deposits and incoming dividends.  Pretty good time for a correction as I'd like to be fully invested.

I will be purchasing equities on a weekly basis for the next 5 months or so.  I'm giving myself 2 additional purchases for February (for a total of 6 buys) in order to use up free trades and get idle cash invested.  So far I really don't think there is an advantage to making a bunch of small purchases compared to one large purchase.  However buying a stock every week is something to look forward to, it sure is fun!

  1. The advantage to smaller purchases, at least in my eyes, is that it gives you a chance to nibble on big down days and look to add more on further weakness. If I had free trades I would be making smaller purchases and DCA a bit, especially with the markets being quite volatile to end the month. Lots of dividends to get the new year started off right. Mine weren't anywhere near yours for January but it was a solid month.

    Have a great weekend!

    1. Onward and upward!

I am more appreciative of the fact I will not be charged commissions or fees in my Scottrade account for 6 months than anything else. Small purchase are a nice way to DCA and they are fun, though I see no long term benefits. I'm just as likely to buy too little or buy at a lousy price (which is way too easy with a small amount) as I am to gain any tangible benefits.

      Best wishes my man!

  2. Wow you made lots of moves this month CI. I'm so glad the market if finally selling off. I hope it continues for at least a couple weeks. I see you picked up some Unilever this month. I bought some this morning. It has the makings of a core portfolio holding, I think. I like how you're so systematic about your purchases.
    Have a great weekend

    1. I made a lot of small moves, and will continue to do so. I am interested in more UL and may pick up a few additional shares on Monday, though a few other companies are also looking attractive. UL won't be a core holding for me, though it's in the same league!

      Enjoy your weekend!

  3. CI,

    A very eventful month!

Nice job on the dividends. Over $400 in January is an awesome start to 2014. I anticipate a big year for you!

    Keep up the great work.

    Best wishes.

    1. Thanks DM,

February is perhaps my make or break month because I'm expecting quite a few increases. If February is good, I'd expect the rest of the year to follow suit. We'll see...

I'm supposed be out of the country half the month which I'll talk about after I'm officially issued plane tickets. I might have to get purchases in the next couple weeks before it gets crazy.

Thank you for taking the time to write an uplifting comment!

  5. Great work CI! Loving the small purchases as it is giving me more updates to read! Looking good, and that Lending Club interest will really start growing with those additional deposits and monthly compounding and note reinvestments.

    1. I hope to double LC interest this year. Not sure if it's realistic or not, but I'll try!

  6. That's a pretty good month Compounding Income! I'm happy to see the market start to cool off a little bit. Some companies I'm interested in are coming down to a price that almost has me pulling the trigger. Hopefully I'll get to pick up some of them this next month.
I like the idea of making smaller purchases each week because it keeps it fun and makes it interesting. I usually just make 1 big purchase a month (2 if I'm lucky) because I try to keep trading costs down. But if I had free trades, I'd spread the money around more for sure. Keep up the good work!

    1. Dan,

I'm with you on the sell off! I'm currently contemplating UL, PM, and CVX as possible purchases next week. I might even buy all 3 to simplify things. Hard to narrow it down.

Yes small purchases do keep investing fun. Investing is rather boring, I'll enjoy it while it lasts.

Thanks for the comment, I hope life is treating you well!

  8. $400 in a single month? You are quite the inspiration to the rest of us.
If you look back at your first couple months... how does it feel to have come this far?

    1. Haha, I hadn't looked at any of those old posts in a while. January 2012 I earned $158, wow! It still feels like I have a long way to go... unfortunately this isn't a get rich quick scheme. I guess I'll have to keep plugging away at it and see where it takes me.

Thanks for the kind words, you just made my day!

  9. CI, it's good you have those free trades as you can phase your entry into a stock in smaller amounts without being hit by a fee or commission. Mainly these days as stocks tumble you can average down nicely.

Great income from dividends. I hope I will catch with you up soon! :)
